andrew piercy artwork

back to main gallery

Andrew Piercy paints large brushy abstractions, using very directional brushstrokes. He uses a variety of types of paintbrushes and other implements to move the paint around the different surfaces he paints on. He has recently been introduced to watercolor, and paints large fields of fluid, vibrant colors reminiscent of the poured paintings of Helen Frankenthaler. Initially, Andrew did not take to painting on canvas; he preferred to work on large plywood panels, comparing painting on that surface to painting on a house. He even called the process of painting on wood “painting the house”. Since then, Andrew works on both canvas and wood, and now also stretched watercolor paper. As he paints, his body moves as if in a choreographed dance or tai chi poses. He works quickly and forcefully. His paintings, although abstract, are named for natural or architectural elements: rainbows, houses, lakes, and bridges. He is one of the most prolific artists from InsideOut Studios.
